Ebb :
Also known as a falling tide. Refers to the movement of the tide when it is going out.

Estran :
partie du rivage qui se couvre et se découvre entre les plus hautes et les plus basses mers.
 

Flow :
This is the movement of the rising tide.

High tide :
This is the reference shown on tide tables to indicate the highest level reached by the sea during the given tide cycle.

Low tide :
This is the reference shown on tide tables to designate the lowest level reached by the sea during a given cycle.

Neap tide :
Low amplitude tide - the opposite to Spring tides - produced when the Moon, the Earth and the Sun are out of line with each other.

SHOM :
The French Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service is the official body which collects and publishes all nautical information. Amongst other things, it is responsible for drawing up the vital guide to tide times, which can be found in newsagents, tourist offices and maritime coops.
 

Slack :
The short period during which the sea remains constant (between the end of the rising tide and the beginning of the ebbing tide, or vice versa).
Foreshore:
The part of the shore which is covered and uncovered between the highest and lowest tides.

Spring tide :
The tide when there is a full or a new moon, during which the tidal range is at its maximum.

Tidal range :
The difference between the height of the tide at high tide and low tide.

  Tide coefficient :
A figure between 20 and 120 which
indicates the amplitude of the tide
(the higher the coefficient, the higher
the tide).
